But the real story of the Captain Marvel Effect isn’t a respectably successful comic book title. It’s the fans. Naming themselves (There it is again – that naming thing.) the Carol Corps, fans and followers of Captain Marvel have created a veritable tidal wave of enthusiasm for the character through social media, conventions, meet-ups, creator-approved gear, and other creative endeavors. There’s a yarn brigade that knits ugly lucky hats, video message initiatives , a tumblr dedicated to fawning over Carol’s hair, and all of that enthusiasm has elevated DeConnick to celebrity status, made Captain Marvel into Marvel’s most prominent female superhero, and created a new model for how the mainstream comics industry might do better business.
This is a great article on why the Carol Corps is so cool — besides our amazing hair, that is.
